Professor August L. Mayer, former chief curator of the Munich Art Museum, hovered between life and death today following his attempt at suicide last night, when he slashed his arteries in his prison cell.

Professor Mayer, who is of Jewish origin, has long been recognized as an authority on Spanish art. He was arrested last March and his attempt at suicide was believed caused by desperation as a result of three months solitary confinement and continuous interrogation.
