The project for the foundation of a deaf and dumb home here, following a bequest made to the Alliance Israelite Universelle in Paris for the purpose, by the late Leone A. Levy, a well-known resident of Shanghai, who died in May, 1929, has been successfully consummated. A sum of £15,000 has been spent on the new building. At one time the question of organization was rather complicated, the revenue from the bequest, though important, not being sufficient to create a boarding school. For this reason it was decided, while waiting for other gifts, to start the experiment with a day school.
The school has been functioning this year with 20 children on the roll. All the pupils, who are taught to converse in Hebrew, receive their mid-day meal at the school; those whose parents do not live in Jerusalem also receive, if the family is without means, the evening meal and lodging as well.
The Alliance has engaged for one year M. Hoxter, an experienced Jewish professor from the model deaf and dumb school of Berlin.
