fear because the new law is not directed against them.”

EVADE LEAGUE DISCUSSION

Foreign diplomatic circles here are awaiting with great interest the developments ensuing when the Jews of Germany will be officially declared third-class citizens of the Reich. In the opinion of several of them, this law will not be promulgated before October in order to avoid giving the Council of the League of Nations any ground for discussing the matter at its September session.

The official statement announcing the proposed law revealed that Jews born in Germany will be deprived of their citizenship rights and will be considered only as residents of the country. The statement did not specify whether their status would be that of staatenlose (men without citizenship in any country) or whether they will enjoy German protection. It followed announcement of a law depriving Eastern European Jews of citizenship conferred on them since the outbreak of the war.
