A delegation representing the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO), which is holding its conference here prior to the eighteenth World Zionist Congress, today was received by Mayor Karel Baxa at the City Hall. In a speech of welcome to the Jewish women, the mayor declared the City of Prague felt honored at having been selected as the scene of important Zionist deliberations.
Dr. Vera Weizmann, president of the organization, responded with a toast to President Masaryk of the Czechoslovakian Republic, and the delegation cheered the toast in Hebrew with cries of “Hedad!”
Mrs. Hadassah Samuel, daughter-in-law of Sir Herbert Samuel, noted British statesman and Jewish leader, responded to the Mayor’s address with a brief speech in Hebrew.
The delegation also placed a wreath on the grave of Czechoslovakia’s unknown soldier.
A feature of the WIZO conference, contrary to previous practice, was the failure to use the German language in the opening address and in most of the speeches made.
Committees of the organization were in session tonight discussing problems of Palestine immigration in the light of the German situation with particular reference to the qualifications of German-Jewish women enabling their settlement in Palestine.
