“The fate of German Jews shows us clearly the necessity for the establishment of a Jewish national home,” Dr. Sokolow continued. “Never before has the necessity for Zionism appeared as impressive as now. Referring to the status of the Jews in Russia, Dr. Sokolow said, “Russian Jewry, once so active, virtually the leader in Jewish intellectual endeavor, has sunk to a standstill. Our feelings revolt at the persecutions to which Zionists are exposed. A cry of protest is wrung from our breasts against the senseless expulsion of the Hebrew language from Jewish education and Jewish life.
“To de-Judaize is to us to dehumanize. Jews cannot free themselves of their historic, cultural, religious and national relationships unpunished. A condition of Jewish unconcernedness is unthinkable. We cannot permit Russian Jewry, brave and deserving Russian Jewry, to be stricken nationally and culturally from the book of the living without moral consequences.
A FATAL MISTAKE
“The extirpation of the oldest language of the cultural world is vandalism.
“It appears to us to be one of the fatal mistakes of Bolshevism to oppose Zionism, which is the self-help and the future of the Jewish people.
