Jewish immigration to Brazil has been completely halted by the labor department here.
This became known through a curious incident. Your correspondent succeeded in obtaining a written document in which the labor department states that all Jewish applications for entrance into the country are being held up, pending a final decision by the minister of the department regarding the matter of Jewish immigration to Brazil generally. The curious element in the case is the fact that the letter was written to a Gentile whose name is Isaac and who, because of his name, was taken to be a Jew.
The document substantiates a previous report to the effect that Jewish applications were not being passed by the authorities. All efforts on the part of local Jewry to effect a change in the ministry’s decision have thus far been fruitless. The worst of the matter is that no reason is given for the sudden decision, which has practically eliminated the possibility of Jews in any country to enter Brazil and is prolonging the separation of many families.
