An attempt by Attorney H. I. Countryman, mayoralty candidate, of Struthers, a suburb, to have the swastika placed above his name on the ballot brought such a storm of disapproval that the Board of Elections has ruled it out.
Countryman, however, denied that his campaign is patterned in any way after the Nazi party in Germany.
“The mere fact that I drew a swastika on my petition has no significance beyond the fact that for uncounted years the swastika has been accepted as an omen of good luck,” he said.
