A drop in the number of foreign tourists and visitors in Germany is indicated in statistics made public in the Berlin press.
The figures reveal that during August which is usually the most active month in the season for tourist travel, about 12,000 foreigners visited Berlin including the Nuremberg visitors who came to witness the festivities there. This number includes 2,119 Americans and 1,089 Britons. The total is less than half of last year’s figure.
The conspicuous decrease in American tourist visitors is interpreted by the Berlin press as being due, not to hostility toward Germany, but to the economic crisis.
“The small number of American tourists,” says the Acht Uhr Abendblatt, “this year is best proof how strong the economic depression rages there.”
