The monster anti-Semitic demonstration scheduled for the beginning of October at Bucharest by the Iron Guards organization headed by Professor Cuza, and in which fifty thousand are expected to participate, is causing considerable anxiety among the Roumanian Jews.
Jewish representatives have approached the government to take measures to insure peace if the demonstration is not to be prohibited. They also drew the attention of the government to the growing incitement against the Jews in the Bessarabian German colonies conducted by Hitlerite agents.
Carloads of swastikas have been freely distributed among the population. Anti-Semitic literature is being widely circulated and many mass meetings are being held. The government authorities promised to make an investigation.
Roumanian Jews are also aroused by government circulars sent to officials and schools urging them to keep appointments down to the proportion of the ethnological divisions of the population. The Jewish deputy Michu Wiesmann, in a letter to Premier Vaida-Voevod, declared that he will bring the matter up as soon as parliament opens, particularly in view of the fact that it was the Premier himself who first introduced discriminations against the ethnological minorities in a circular which he issued to the banks.
Now the government authorities, following the example of the Premier, have circularized even the private schools and other institutions, ordering them to reduce the number of Jews. This is tantamount to a numerus clausus in all branches of employment, Deputy Wiesmann concluded.
