With eight or nine candidates for mayor in the field and with at least four political groups putting complete tickets in the field, the large Jewish vote in New York City assumes an added importance in this year of complex and tangled political lineups. All the groups have Jewish candidates in key positions.
Running on the fusion ticket with Major Fiorello H. LaGuardia are Bernard S. Deutsch, president of the American Jewish Congress, for President of the Board of Aldermen Irving Ben Cooper, one of Judge Seabury’s assistants in the recent municipal investigation, is seeking the post of city judge. Judge Edgar J. Lauer and George Trosk are candidates for the Supreme Court bench.
In the Bronx the fusionists have nominated Abraham Grenthel for Sheriff of Bronx County, Abraham Mandel for County Clerk, Joseph S. Israel and Harry L. Wechsler for justices of the city court.
On the same ticket with Mayor John P. O’Brien are Samuel Levy, candidate for Borough President of Manhattan and Judge Samuel I. Rosenman who was nominated for the Supreme Court bench.
The political group headed by former Mayor Joseph V. McKee has nominated Nathan Straus, Jr. for President of the Board of Aldermen and Joseph J. Baker for Borough President of Brooklyn.
The Socialists have nominated Charles Solomon for Mayor of the City of New York.
