The Warburg Library will be moved from Hamburg to London, it was stated here today. It is expected that the final destination of the Library will be the United States.
The Warburg Library, which was closed last summer by the Nazis, was founded by Professor Aby Warburg, brother of Felix M., Paul M., and Max M., Warburg. He was born in Hamburg in 1886 and died there October 26, 1929.
Professor Warburg, a noted authority on the Renaissance, devoted his time and energy to the study of the history of art and of religion. Encouraged by Carl Justi and Jacob Burckhardt, authorities on the Renaissance period, Professor Warburg spent years in these studies. He carefully and ceaselessly collected all the materials needed in his studies, thus building up a valuable archive of Renaissance documents.
It was his aim to encourage research in the various legacies of the Renaissance from a single point of view. In this way, he managed to build up about the Library, a scientific institute. Many noted scholars have made use of the valuable documents contained in the Warburg Library.
Last year the Warburg Library published two volumes of Professor Warburg’s collected works, entitled “The Renaissance of Heathen Antiquity.”
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
