A decree ordering strict Sunday observance in Salonica was published today in the official Greek Gazette. It was signed by President Alexander Zaimis. The new order constitutes a serious blow to the Jewish merchants of Salonica, who will now be compelled to keep their shops closed two days a week, or become Sabbath breakers, since keeping open on Saturday is permitted.
Sunday has been only a partial day of rest in Salonica since 1923. At that time, following energetic Jewish protests, small Jewish trades, including grocers and food shops, were permitted to keep their stores open Sunday mornings. The presidential decree abolishing this privilege follows protests made by Gentile grocers and food dealers demanding complete observance of Sunday as a day of rest.
