Emphatic protest against the immigration policies of Great Britain in Palestine was voiced yesterday at a regional conference of Hadassah, attended by more than 200 delegates representing Hadassah branches in Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware.
Emphasizing the historic right of the Jewish people to Palestine, the resolution calls upon Great Britain to recall the present policy and to replace it with a policy in keeping with the spirit of the Mandate. A copy of the resolution was ordered sent to the British Ambassador and to the League of Nations.
Rabbi Simon Greenberg, bringing greetings on behalf of Avukah of which he is a national president, compared the new relationship between Hadassah and the Zionist Organization of America to “a divorce between man and wife in which the wife pays the alimony”. “This separation” Rabbi Greenberg said, “places the men on their own mettle. Whereas the Zionist group once consisted of 35,000 of which 25,000 were Hadassah members, now there are only 10,000 male members. These members must work hard to refill the depleted ranks.” Hadassah was lauded by Rabbi Greenberg for its rapid growth from a “tin cup” club to the greatest agency for educating the Jewish women to Zionism.
“The tendency of the Jews to go back East is part of the human process”, Rabbi Greenberg said. “One of the reasons for the survival of the race is its continual movement with civilization. The Jews have always been part of the vanguard of progress. The next great advanceof civilization will be made in the East and mystic as it seems, the Jew is already working there.”
Greeting to the conference were brought by Mrs. Rose Bender, president of the Philadelphia chapter; Rabbi Max D. Klein, president of the Philadelphia branch, Zionist Organization of America; Miss Mildred Murnick, regional president of Junior Hadassah; and Benj. L. Rubinsohu, regional president of the Zionist Organization of America.
Other resoiutions adopted called upon the Jewish women of the Region to increase purchase of memorial tree certificates in Palestine.
Officers elected for the coming year include Mrs. Harry L. Roseh, honorary president; Mrs. Rose Glider, president; Mrs. Frank B. Skversky, first vice-president; Mrs. Julia Wolson, of Wilmington, second vice-presedent; Mrs. Samuel Green of Atlantic City, third vice-president; Mrs. D. P. Fishback, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Samuel Josephson of Camden, recording secretary; Mrs. Peter Myers, Reading, financial secretary and Mrs. Marion Miller, treasurer.
