Congregation Shaarai Shomayim of this city, one of the oldest religious organizations in the South, will observe the ninetieth anniversary of the legal incorporation of the congregation of Junuary 25-26. Records in the Probate Court of Mobile Country show that articles of incorporation were issued to the congregation on January 25, 1844. In 1840, city records show that a plot of ground was purchased by the founders of the congregation for a Hebrew cemetery.

Captain Leon Schwarz, the present president of the congregation, is a former mayor of Mobile. During its near-century of existence, the congregation has been one of Mobile’s revered institutions and its membership has been prominent in the civic life of the community.
