Warning against the possibility of both anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic movements in this country should the criticism of popular government and popular assemblies become violent here, Michael Williams, editor of The Commonweal, a Catholic weekly, urged members of all faiths to unite against the spirit of paganism as manifested in German Nazism, at a luncheon of the local branch of the American Jewish Congress.
About fifty members were present to hear Mr. Williams, who recently returned from a visit to Germany. He declared that there are millions of Germans of all faiths who are as “horrified and amazed” as are the Jews of this country at the Nazi spirit of “malicious pride.”
Mr. Williams asserted that movements such as the Silver Shirts in this country are significant, although at the present time of small proportions.
