Rabb Stephen S. Wise of New York may come to San Francisco, in behalf of the American Jewish Congress, some time next month to address a mass meeting on the general problem of Hitler and anti-Semitism.
Word of his contemplated visit was received here by local members of the national executive committee of the Congress. A number of informal conferences have been held but to date no definite plans have been perfected. If Dr. Wise comes to the coast, it will be his first visit in a number of years.
UNTERMYER DUE ALSO
Another visitor to San Francisco next month will be Samuel Untermyer, New York attorney and militant anti-Nazi worker, who is on a countrywide speaking tour. He will address a local audience at a mass meeting one Tuesday evening, February 13, in the Exposition Auditorium; Bishop Edward Lambe Parsons presiding. Samuel Rodall is chairman of the San Francisco committee of the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League, sponsors of the Untermyer affair.
E. M. Hirschfelder, well-known in the local Jewish community, was honored by Governor Rolph with appointment to the State Social Welfare Board. Mayor Rossi of San Francisco has reappointed Edgar Walter of the Art Commission and Milton Meyer of the City Planning Commissin.
Dr. Rudolph I. Coffee, president of the Jewish committee for personal service in state institutions, was accorded an unusual tributed by inmates of San Quentin on his first visti to the prison since he returned from the East. When he stepped into the prison yeard for the monthly service conducted by the committee, the prison band, informed in advance of his coming, played in his honor.
A drive for new members is being organized by the San Francisco Zionist district under the leadership of Martin Rosenblatt. The district now numbers more than 250 members.
