Of the 5,728 Jewish aliens that came to America during the past year, 2,288 were in the direct custoday of Hias representatives, is the report given by Isaac L. Asofsky, general manager of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society. More than 700 steamers carrying Jewish immigrants were met by the representatives of this organization. Kosher meals served to Jews detained on Ellis Island were more than 16,000.
The Hias gives legal advice, general assistance and representation before governmental bodies and other agencies to immigrants, as well as preparing documents making arrangements with steamship lines.
In immigration countries the Hias representatives attend to all the delails incidental to landing of the stranger. Employment and loan bureaus aid the immigrant in finding a foothold in the New land. Language and civic courses are given to enable the newcomers to adjust themselves in the new land.
