Current public approval of birth contro will be followed by removal of the State and Church stigna against its pratice, predicted Rabbi Israel Goldstein yesterday in this sermon on “Our Changing Morals” before Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, 88th street west of Broadway. “The presence in our Statue books of laws against the giving of birth control information is an anachronism in our modern civilization,” he declared. “More than an anachronism, it is a rank bypocrisy, comparable to our late Lamented Prohibition law, but far more nefarious. It would seem that the depression throught which we are passing and the economic misery afflicting millions of our population, would have stirred communities to revoke these antiquated laws. Yet no such thing has happened. This country may be in the vanguard of the nations in technical efficiency, but we are far behind in social legislation.”
DOOMED CIVILIZATION
“A would be civilization that is buit upon the cornerstone of hatred, bigotry and prejudice must totter and fall into oblivion,” delared Rabbi Joseph Zeitlin to the congregation of Temple Ansche Chesed, 100th Street and West End Avenue, in a sermon on “The Law of Life.”
“Man is often inclined to measure strength in terms of numbers and it is only natural that when a leader succeeds in enlisting the sympathy of millions of people, the inference is drawn that great poer rests with him. Nazism has succeeded in attracting great numbers of men and women, but are these poeple so many real personalities or are they mere puppets in the hands of a self-terned Messiah? The answere comes to us in no uncertain terms. Righteousness has withstood the test and will continue to prevail invincibly.”
LINCOLN AND HITLER
Comparing Lincoln and Hitler befor Congregation Chab Sholom, 143 West 93rd streed, whose spiritual leader is Rabbi I. Mortiner Bloom, Dr. Alexander Lyons of Eighth Ave. Temple, Brooklyn, declared that “we Jews love Lincoln as of our Spirit, we Americans and all congenial sould everywhere, must make common cause at the serious danger of Hitlerism to civilization and bring to bear upon it the supernal spirit of Lincoln, who like Abraham of old was missioned by God to be a blessing to humanity.
“The Jews are suffering a novel tragedy. A proesumptive racialism and an arrogant might are arrayed against them with destructive de termination. But others are involved with us. Some of the onblest ideasl of Judaism, Christainity and civilization are attacked. For these as well as for his personal welfare must the Jew fight. For this combat we must have and ask the co-operation of others. Lincoln’s spirit must be our guide.”
