A state-wide bill permitting the observance of the Jewish sabbath by Jewish businessmen in non Jewish as well as Jewish neighborhoods,to be introduced shortly at Albany, LaGuardia.
Jewish businessmen who wish to observe the Sabbath and conduct their business on Sundays were advised by Mayor LaGuardia Monday to display signs stating that they were sabbath observers and,should they be served police summonses for keeping their places of business open on Sunday,to accept such summonses without question.The mayor expressed his views on Sabbath observance to a committee representing the Union of Orthodox Rabbis which called up used police intererence with Jewish businessmen.The mayor said that he respected the desire on the part of Jewish storekeepers and others to observe tha Jewish Sabbath,and promised that he would confer with Police Commissioner O’Ryan on the subject.
The rabbinical delegation,which included Rabbi Jacob Levinson, Rabbi E.Predemsky,Rabbi Joseph Konowitz,Rabbi I .Idelson and Judte Jonah J. Goldstein,also took up with the-mayor the question of non-kosher food,which is distributed by the home relief offices to the Jewish needy.The mayor promised to take the matter up with the Commissioner of Public Welfare.
