Duties on wheat, rye, flour and semolina will be reduced for May 31, according to a decision announced by the High commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauhope, who has conferred on the matter with the British Colonial Secretary.
The lowered prices willl enable consumers, most of whom bake their own breadstuffs, to obtain these commodities without harming the interests of the cultivators. The measure was recommended by the standing committee for commerce and industry.
The High Commissioner’s announcement also said that beginning April 1, the value of each commodity will be determined quarterly instead ofmonthly. As a result merchants, who place orders fortnightly, will have a lageer time margin to receive imports whose duties will not be changed before tghe consignments arrive.
