The House Immigration Committee concluded hearings on eight immigration restriction measures, including the bill introduced by Congressman Dies of Texas proposing a sixty percent cut in present immigration quotas.
It is understood that Congressman Samuel Dickstein, chairman of the Committee, and the majority of the members are opposed to the bills and will block the reporting of the bills and will block the reporting of the bills to the House. Congressman Dies fought vigorously to have his measure favorably recommended by the House, but was defeated after having been severely criticized by the Committee chairman for his unfair tactics in pressing for approval of his bill.
At the open Committee hearing a large group of the so-called patriotic groups drew the ire of Committee members when they applauded every remark in favor of restriction.
Maurice D. Rosenberg, representing the American Jewish Committee and the B’nai B’rith; Isidore Hershfield, Washington representative of the Hias; Max Rhoades, representative of the American Jewish Congress, and Mrs. Mark Lanburgh, appeared for the Jewish organization opposing any further immigration restrictions.
