The Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities, which opened its twenty-fifth anniversary campaign last night, merits the wholehearted support of the entire Jewish community of Brooklyn, Supreme Court Justice Mitchell May, president of the Federation, and Judge Algernon I. Nova, chairman of the campaign, together with other leaders, have outlined the urgent needs of the various institutions supported by the various institutions supported by the Federation.

In the present crisis through which German Jewry is passing and which affects the Jews all over the world, the Jews of America must not neglect their own charitable and educational institutions. The better these institutions are maintained and the stronger Jewish cultural life becomes in America, the better equipped will American Jewry be to cope with the grave problems of our people abroad.

The Jews of Brooklyn. as always, are sure to demonstrate their responsibility and generosity in answer to the Federation’s appeal.

NAZI PROPAGANDA

It is reported that the Nazi government will withdraw its financial support from the Nazi propaganda publications in the United States. The Hitlerites, who had tried to deny their activities here, must have discovered by this time that the vicious and stupid propaganda carried on by these publications is too costly. Not only have vast sums been wasted, but sympathy for Germany has been alienated even among German Americans.

Prussian propaganda during the War was extremely clumsy. It served to discredit Germany. The Nazis are now stooping to the lowest depths in their foreign propaganda. The audacity, shamelessness and clumsiness with which their agents and dupes abroad are carrying on their dastardly work will help to discredit Nazism in the end.

But the end must be hastened by exposing these mischievous charlatans and their vicious activities.

AUSTRIAN HITLERISM

The Christian Socialist Storm Troops of Austria are planning to revise the citizenship of Jews naturalized in Austria since the war and to impose upon them humiliating, ruinous discriminatory laws. The Christian Socialist party, of which Chancellor Dollfuss is a leader, advocates “practical anti-Semitism and the complete elimination of Jewish influence.” The “Association of Aryan Lawyers” in Austria is {SPAN}##{/SPAN} a blacklist system for Christian firms employing Jewish lawyers. Jewish physicians and Jewish nurses are being dismissed from municipal hospitals. The Christian Socialist organ advocates tat the elimination of naturalized Jews from business be brought about not in accordance with judicial regulations, but “in accordance with the political interests of the State.”

Thus all the assurances recently given by the Dollfuss government to the Jews that their rights will not be violated under the present regime, are a mockery, An Austrian brand of Hitlerism is in preparation.

It to be hoped that during his visit to Rome, Chancellor Dollfuss will get some sound advice from Premier Mussolini on this subject. No nation can afford to be divided into different categories of citizens. Such divisions necessarily lead to disintegration and ruin. Little Austria can afford this least of all.
