Speakers at the celebrations in honor of the sixtieth birthday of Rabbi Stephen S. Wise this week will review Dr. Wise’s career in the rabbinate.
At a luncheon Sunday at the Hotel Biltmore, representatives of the Free Synagogue and the Jewish Institute of Religion will express their appreciation of his labors on behalf of these and other Jewish institutions. They will recall his fight for freedom of the pulpit and militancy in Jewish life.
In 1907, Dr. Wise founded the Free Synagogue because his passion for pulpit freedom had prompted him to reject any other congregation. Previously, he had been connected with the Madison Avenue Synagogue in New York and the Beth Israel Congregation, Portland, Oregon. In 1922, Dr. Wise founded the Jewish Institute of Religion, a rabbinical school founded on the principal of unity in Jewry. Many of the graduates from this institution will participate in the anniversary celebration of its founder.

Other aspects of Dr. Wise’s life will be reviewed at the banquet to be held on Monday evening at the Hotel Astor. Albert Einstein, Bainbridge Colby, Dr. John Haynes Holmes, Bernard S. Deutsch and Mayor LaGuardia will be among those who will speak of the activities of Rabbi Wise in civic life. Dr. Wise has always interested himself in the problems of social justice, woman suffrage, civic cleanliness, child labor, labor conditions, world peace, interdenominational understanding, Jewish rights, and the establishment of the Jewish homeland.
