Four hundred leading cifizens of the Brooklyn community have already signified their intention of joining tomorrow evening in a tribute to Dr. Stephen S. Wise at the Hotel St. George, which will serve as the beginning of an organized effort on the part of Brooklyn to mobilize its forces in opposition to the spread of Nazi propaganda, it was announced today by Supreme Court Justice Mitchell May.
The tribute to Dr. Wise is to take the form of a dinner which has been arranged in honor of his sixtieth birthday, and which is the culmination of a series of celebrations which have been held in New York during the past week. The entire proceeds will be utilized to furthering the campaign against the rise of Nazi propaganda in this country and Hitlerism abroad.
Five hundred leading citizens of Brooklyn have joined the dinner committee of five hundred, headed by Judge May, and have arranged the dinner in cooperation with the Brooklyn Division of the American Jewish Congress.
In a statement issued yesterday, Judge May declared that one of the first undertakings of the organization will be to organize a vigorous counter-campaign against Nazi propaganda in Brooklyn.
CASTIGATES NAZI MEETING
He castigated the Nazi meeting in Ridgewood Saturday night, stating: “The meeting of Nazis held last Saturday night at Schwaben Hall in Brooklyn represents the most daring offensive which the Nazis have yet attempted in this part of New York City.
“It is perhaps the first repercussion of the coming to this community of William Dudley Pelley, of the Silver Shirts, and is unquestionably the beginning of what is intended to be a great offensive to win the support of the great Brooklyn community to the hateful principles of Hitlerism.”
