Samuel Untermyer’s offer to help in the Congressional investigation of Nazi propaganda activities in this country should be welcomed by the Dickstein Committee. Mr. Untermyer has declared that if the investigation will be thorough, it will startle the country, for it will demonstrate that there are overwhelming under-cover seditious activities violating our neutrality, and that the present situation is similar to that which existed in 1917.

There is no one who could aid the Congressional Committee to make the investigation more thorough than Mr. Untermyer could. His vast experience, resourcefulness and fearlessness, as well as his genius for unearthing sinister secrets, would assure the success and effectiveness of the investigation.

“THE SHATTER’D LAMN”

A new anti-Nazi play, “The Shatter’d Lamp,” had its premiere at Maxine Elliott’s Theatre on Wednesday. “The Shatter’d Lamp” had but a brief life in London where it was produced by the Progressive Players last January. We hope it will meet with greater success in this country. It is thus far the most striking dramatic portrayal of Nazified Germany presented in New York.

“The Shatter’d Lamp” is not ## faults. It would have been far more effective and impressive if some of the characters were drawn with greater restraint and if some of the exaggerations were eliminated. But it is nevertheless a very powerful indictment of the system that has shocked right-thinking and liberty-loving people everywhere. It is a moving, heart-rending story of a cultured German family driven to a tragic end by the fanaticism and inhuman cruelty of the Nazis.

“The Shatter’d Lamp” is unquestionably dramatic propaganda, with the usual shortcomings of plays written for such purposes. But it is of absorbing interest. It tells the story of present day Germany in a gripping manner. It is but an episode in the German tragedy. But it is well that people everywhere familiarize themselves with German actualities in order that the world conscience may be aroused.

“The Shatter’d Lamp” is distinctly worth seeing.
