Scholar, rabbi, minister, friend all joined yesterday to pay tribute to the memory of the late Rabbi Hyman Gerson Enelow, of Temple Emanu-El, who died last month. Services were conducted at the Temple.

“Dr. Enelow’s life was taken up mainly with three tasks: that of rabbi, of teacher and of scholar,” declared Professor Alexander Marx of the Jewish Theological Seminary in his address eulogizing the late Rabbi. Confining himself to Dr. Enelow’s scholastic achievements, Dr. Marx said, “It was his inspiration which caused two of his intimate friends to establish chairs of Jewish learning at Harvard University and at Columbia. It was during his presidency of the Central Conference of American Rabbis that the Littauer Fund for the subvention of learned publications was established, which, under his guidance, did much for the promotion of Jewish learning.

“His untimely and tragic death,” Professor Marx concluded, “leaves a great gap. Those of us who had the privilege to come close to that noble, modest and retiring man, will forever cherish his memory.”

Samuel M. Newburger, chairman of the school committee, spoke of Rabbi Enelow’s work in the un day school. His force of character, his great love of children and of young people, his organizing capacity, his abilities, had out standing opportunity,” Mr. Newburger declared.

“To the young people he was an inspiration, and as they learned to understand him, they loved and admired him. His memory will be a staff of strength to them in their future life.”
