With normal operations in the fish market at Peek Slip to be resumed tomorrow, the law firm of Straus & Osserman, counsel for the wholesalers, yesterday disclosed that a wholesalers organization to be known as the New York Fresh-Water Fish Trade Association was formed at an executive conference of the wholesalers Friday.
The firm estimated that $250,000 was lost by fish wholesalers as a result of the stoppage of fish buying during last week and the cessation of buying because of the last two days of the Passover holidays when orthodox Jews do no business.
A quantity of fresh water fish was discarded and the rest was put in cold storage until tomorrow morning.
The directors of the new association, who will serve until June 15 when the first annual conference will be held include Saul Broome, Jack Marbach, David O’keefe, Milton Rabinowitz, and Otto Wittenstein. At Friday’s meeting the following purposes of the Association were formulated:
“To promote high standards of business ethics; to prevent unfair competition and eliminate trade abuses; to afford means of communication among members and other groups interested; to bring closer cooperation and better will among producer, retailer, and consumer; to obtain uniformity in trade customs and usages; to prepare for mobilization of the industry in case of emergency; to promote settlement of disputes without litigation; to collect and disseminate statistics, promote research and investigation; to get accurate information as to the credit rating of all persons in the industry, to encourage and support municipal, state and federal legislation for the industry.”
