Dr. Stephen S. Wise, honorary president of the American Jewish Congress, discussed the “Case of Civilization against Hitlerism” over radio station WEVD yesterday afternoon.
The speech, made under the auspices of the Women’s Association of the American Jewish Congress, stressed the responsibility of women in the work of counteracting Nazi propaganda in this country and Hitlerism abroad. Dr. Wise spoke from the studios of the World Clothing Exchange, 572 Broadway, which made the broadcast possible by turning over its time on the air.
The broadcast was the first of an educational series launched by the Women’s Association to acquaint the public with the nature of Nazism’s menace. Tonight at the Free Synagogue the second event of this series will be held. It will be a forum featuring as chief speaker Miriam Beard, daughter of Charles and Mary Beard, noted historians, and the wife of Professor Vagts, exiled German professor. Edward Cahn, lawyer, lecturer, prominent in welfare activities in this city, will lead the discussion. Mrs. Kaia Williams will preside.
Under the auspices of the Sisterhood of the Jewish Center and the local branch of Hadassah, a meeting will be held Tuesday night in Sunnyside as the third event of the series. Its purpose is to mobilize women in that community to join the Women’s Association in combating Hitlerism. Dr. Albert Brandt and Mrs. Caroline Greenfield will be the chief speakers. Rabbi L. Becker of the Jewish Center will preside.
Declaring that the world cannot survive “half Hitler and half civilized,” Dr. Wise pointed out that “boycott” is not really the right name for the weapon being used by Jews throughout the world to combat Hitlerism. The correct term, Dr. Wise said, should be “anti-boycott,” because the real boycott was instituted by the Germans against the Jews. Dr. Wise called attention to a statement made by one of Hitler’s intimate friends in which he said that the object of the Nazis was not only to exterminate Jews in Germany, but to show other nations how to get rid of Jews.
