High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope of Palestine will make recommendations to the British government on the subject of granting subsidies to the Jewish rabbinical courts in Palestine, Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, Secretary of State for Colonies, replied today in the House of Commons to a question put to him.
The questioner, a Conservative Member of Parliament, D. J. B. Joel, wanted to know why Arab religious courts were granted financial assistance, while Jewish religious courts were ignored. Sir Philip replied that Arab subventions dated back to the time when Turkey ruled Palestine.
When asked about the electric concession on Lake Tiberius granted to Pinchus Rutenberg, who built the Jordan hydroelectric station, Sir Philip answered that if the level of the lake would be lowered by the power plant, leading to desecration of the site which has sacred associations, the government will take steps to prevent such desecration.
