Deport Nazis from Brazil; Attack Jews

A batle took place today between Brazilian police and members of the anti-Semitic Fascist Integralists today in the city of Bello Horizonte, in the State of Minas Geraes, according to reports reaching here.

The anti-Semitic Fascists attacked a Jewish meeting held as a protest against anti-Semitism in Brazil. Police intervened at once and beat back the Fascist attack after a clash on the streets.

The government of the state of Rio Grande do Sul deported twenty-two German Nazis who were conducting blacklist propaganda in the state against opponents of the Nazis. The German Ambassador in Brazil intervened on behalf of the prisoners, but his protests were disregarded and the men deported.

Deputy Nogueira, a member of the Constituent Assembly, introduced a measure calling for the limitation of immigration into Brazil to five per cent for each nationality on the basis of the census of 1920.

The police of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro decided to take over control of immigration, demanding a guarantee deposit from each immigrant of $300, the deposit to be returned when the immigrant has been established definitely in the country. The orders make it practically impossible to bring into the country impoverished relatives and German Jewish refugees.

Jewish institutions of Sao Paulo have organized a league to combat the growth of anti-Semitism. The new group issued an appeal to the Jews of Brazil to join the organization and to fight the menace of Fascism and anti-Semitism in Brazil.

Maronites, Christian Arabs from the Lebanon and Palestine, who have established large colonies in Brazil, have organized a committee to raise funds for a campaign against their opponents. They claim that they are being persecuted by “Mohammedans, Englishmen and Jews.”
