The United Synagogue of America last night raised its battle axe to do what it can to throttle the young but thriving infant anti-Semitism in this country.
Meeting at its twenty-second annual conference held in the Hotel Willard here, delegates from a considerable number of synagogues throughout America gathered to consider problems as to how to strengthen organization work among temple and synagogue supporters. These problems included “the present crisis in Jewry,” “social welfare,” “cultural and education work,” “what the sisterhood can do to fight anti-Jewish prejudice,” Jewish education in general, etc.
Opening with a prayer by Rabbi Solomon H. Metz of this city, Louis Soll, of Brooklyn, delivered an address. Other speakers who followed were Bernard S. Karmatz, president of the Young People’s League of the United States; Theodore Charnas, president of the National Federation; Dr. Elias Margolis, president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America; Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and Mrs. Samuel Spiegel, president of the Women’s League of the United States. Louis J. Moss, national president of the organization, delivered his annual report.
Mr. Charnas will open the convention of the National Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs tomorrow night. The session will be devoted to a symposium on “The Responsibility of the Men’s Club of the Jewish Youth.” Speakers will be Rabbi Morris Silverman, of Hartford, Conn., and Dr. I. David Cohen, of Brooklyn.
Sessions of the synagogue will resume Monday afternoon when Rabbi Herman H. Rubonovitz, of Roxbury, Mass., and Martin Wechsler, of Brooklyn, discuss “The New Program of the United Synagogue for Its Constituent Organizations.” At this session Rabbi Leon S. Lang, of Newark, N.J., will present a plea for the celebration next year throughout the United States of the 800th anniversary of the birthday of Moses Maimonides.
The annual convention dinner will be held Monday. The principal speakers will be Senator Robert F. Wagner, of New York; Representative Herman P. Kopplemann, of Connecticut; Judge Hyman J. Reit, of New York, and Mrs. Spiegel.
Delegations of all three conventions will unite Monday in a special ceremony to observe the laying of the cornerstone of the Jerusalem Synagogue and Centre in Jerusalem, which will take place the same day. The synagogue is being built from funds raised by the United Synagogue of America and the Women’s League.
