An official representative of the Congressional committee investigating subversive propaganda activities in the United States will attend the mass meeting sponsored by the Friends of New Germany, it was authoritatively learned today.
The mass meeting is scheduled to be held May 17 at Madison Square Garden, New York, for the purpose of protesting the boycott in this country against goods imported from Germany. The committee’s representative will be present at the meeting in the capacity of an observer. It is understood that he will be unknown to anyone present at the meeting.
In sending an observer to the mass meeting sponsored by the Friends of New Germany, the Congressional investigating committee headed by Representative John W. McCormack of Massachusetts, hopes to get first hand information on the background of the stir now current in German-American circles in this country. Among the things the investigator will try to learn are the source and actual sponsorship of anti-Semitic activities being promoted by the Friends of New Germany.
The committee’s representative will mingle freely with persons attending the mass meeting and will try to get behind the scenes to learn something of the individuals and forces which motivated the meeting.
TO REPORT TO GROUP
Upon his return to Washington, the investigator is scheduled to make a report to the McCormack committee. This probably will be done at the first executive session of the committee after his return.
Two weeks ago members of Congress received a letter from the New York headquarters of the Friends of New Germany inviting the lawmakers to the “mass meeting of protest.” The letter informed the Congressmen that “Your personal preference whether you wish to attend as an announced guest or unannounced and unknown among the audience will be respected.”
