A new kashruth association, designed to coordinate the regulation of kashruth in this city, will be organized following a series of meetings between the various groups and organizations interested in the problem, Arthur Simon, special investigator for the New York City Department of Health, told the Jewish Daily Bulletin yesterday.
Three meetings are scheduled to begin following the termination of the Shabuoth holidays tonight, Mr. Simon said.
The new committee for the regulation of the orthodox kosher laws follows many weeks of negotiation and discussion of the problem. For years it has been alleged that butcher shops and other stores selling food guaranteed to be kosher were in reality not obeying all the religious regulations.
When the LaGuardia administration took office last January, the Mayor appointed a special subcommittee to deal with the problem of which William Weiss, president of the Union of Orthodox Congregations, was elected chairman. Mr. Simon, of the Health Department, was also designated to investigate the situation and make recommendations for improvement.
Since January various rabbinical organizations have been meeting to deliberate on the affair. One of the chief difficulties encountered was unwillingness on the part of orthodox rabbis to consent to the inclusion of conservative rabbis on an equal footing in any kashruth regulating body. The city administration has been insistent on the formation of a united body #########mposed of all Jewish groups as a requisite for a new deal in kashruth control.
