A new anti-Semitic Campaign has broken out in Austria.
Newspapers feature attacks on Jews and anti-Semitic meetings, which have been forbidden for some time, and are now in full swing again in Austrian cities and villages.
Neuigkeits Welblatt, which is generally regarded as an origin of the Dollfuss regime, prominently featured and an account of a large anti-Semitic meeting in Vienna, declaring that stormy applause greeted the remarks of one of the speakers, who demanded government cooperation in achieving “a celebration of liberation from the Jews, similar to the 1933 celebration of liberation from the Turks.”
The speaker also was cheered when the demanded a strict numerus clausus for Jews in all walks of life and an inquiry into the citizenship rights of all East European naturalized Jews.
Vienna Jewry is particularly alarmed by the attacks because they are being countenanced by groups close to the Dollfuss regime. The fact that the anti-Semites obtained permission to hold their meetings is regarded as particularly significant in view of the fact that some time ago attempts of the anti-Semites to hold meetings were prohibited by the Dollfuss regime.
