Louis Hourwich of Boston was elected president of the National Council for Jewish Education at its closing session yesterday. Other officers elected include Fr. Jacob S. Golub of Cincinnati, Dr. Samuel Dinin of New York and Rabbi Barnet Brickner. Ben Rosen of Philadelphia was elected editor of the official publication, “Jewish Education.”
Matters pertaining to the business affairs of the organization also were discussed.
A. P. Schoolman of New York announced yesterday that progress has been made by the School of Education at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Mr. Schoolman told the combined meeting of three Jewish education and social service organizations that the establishment of the school is the only effective means for providing better trained teachers for the Palestinian school system. The university alone has a staff and equipment for higher educational training he declared.

Ben M. Selekman of the Associated Jewish Philanthropies of Boston today was elected president of the National Conference of Jewish Social Service Workers in one of the most spirited elections in the history of the organization. Selekman was opposed by Miss Mary E. Boretz, Home Bureau, Hebrew sheltering Guardian society of New York.
The election brought to a conclusion the Conference’s annual convention in session here since last Thursday.
Selekman represented the administration forces in the conference, upholding Jewish emphasis in social service work. Miss Boretz was nominated by petition. Selekman received seventy-eight votes and Miss Boretz, seventy-one.
The first ballot ended the vote, but complications were caused by the fact that one vote was handed in while the first ballot was being cast. Without opening the ballot tellers asked the delegates for a ruling. Following discussion a motion was passed to discard the first ballot and vote anew. This is the second year in succession in which the vote for president necessitated a second ballot.
Marcel Kovarsky, Jewish Board of Guardians of New York; Dr. Jacob S. Golub of Cincinnati; Jacob Fisher of New York and Ezekiel London of New York were elected members of the national executive committee of the conference.
