El Correo De Valdivia, organ of the German Nazis of Chile, is in a precarious predicament because it inadvertently published a photograph showing Nazi brutality.
To everyone’s amazement, the newspaper, which has been conspicuous for its anti-Semitic assertions, appeared with a front-page photograph of the Jewish lawyer whom the Nazis forced to parade the streets of Munich with a sign reading, “I shall not complain against the Nazis.”
The caption over the picture read, “A Victim of Nazi Terror.”
The next day El Correo De Valdivia tried to ### its ### editorially:
“It will be inconceivable to all that El Correo De Valdivia should have published such a picture when the fact of the matter is that this newspaper has always defended the Nazi movement and sung the praises of the glorious Hitler and his aides. The photograph in question was smuggled into the form at the last moment by a worker and went unnoticed by the editors. We ask forgiveness of our readers, although we are aware that such a mistake can not be explained or excused.”
About 80 per cent. of the population of Valdivia, where the paper is published is German.
