the liberal and broadminded Minister of the Interior who had issued the order to suppress the Nazified Polish organization which created chaotic conditions in Poland and which sought to discredit Poland in the eyes of the world.

The Naras are being rounded up in a vigorous effort to stamp out their subversive activities. The government has established three concentration camps for the Nara leaders. The Nara organ, the Stafeta, has been suppressed.

Jewish shops were closed during the funeral of the murdered Minister of the Interior. The heads of all the larger Jewish organizations in Poland met in Warsaw in honor of the slain Polish statesman and marched in the funeral procession.

Cardinal Kakowski, the Archbishop of Warsaw, who previously criticized the Jews when a delegation of Rabbis had urged him to exert his influence to prevent anti-Jewish outrages, has now preached a sermon in which he exhorted the Poles to live in peace with their Jewish neighbors.

It has become clear to the Polish government that the anti-Jewish agitation which culminated first in pogroms and then in the assassination of Marshal Pilsudski’s close friend and aide, had been engineered by elements bent on destroying Poland by Nazi methods and for Nazi purposes.

The statement issued by the American Jewish Congress and the Federation of Polish Jews of America rightly emphasizes this point as follows:

“It is impossible for us not to associate the present murder of the distinguished Minister of the Interior and present attacks on innocent and helpless Jews with the presence I.. Poland of the professional Jew-baiter and enemy of democracy and liberty, Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda of the Nazi government of Germany. We hope the Polish government will take the most vigorous measures to protect its servants and its citizens from the unprovoked attacks of the enemies of free institutions who are without doubt operating under the propaganda and stimulation of Hitler agents.”

I recall my interview with Marshal Pilsudski years ago when he gave me his reasons why Poland would not be affected by Russian bolshevism. He said that Russian bolshevism was not a contagious disease and he had no fear that it would spread to Poland.

It is now far more important for Marshal Pilsudski and for the Polish people to resist the disease of Nazism which is being spread in Poland by Nazi agents and Nazified Poles. The Nazification of Poland would be suicidal to Poland’s independence.
