Baron Maurice de Rothschild of Paris is the first of a number of invited international figures to accept a bid to attend the Jewish Community Day festivities at A Century of Progress on July 29, it was announced by the committee in charge.

Word of the French Jewish leader’s acceptance was received here from Washington, where a committee headed by Congressman Samuel Dickstein called upon the Baron. Among others joining in extending the invitation were Congressman Adolph Sabath, Congresswoman Florence P. Kahn of California, Congressman Emanuel Celler and Theodore A. Peyser of New York; Herman P. Koppelman of Connecticut, and Henry Ellenbogen of Pennsylvania. Congressman Dickstein told Baron Rothschild:

“I consider it an honor and a privilege to extend to you, Baron Rothschild, and your brother, Lord Rothschild of London, an invitation from the Jews of America to be their guests of honor at A Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago to celebrate Jewish Community. Day on July 29. And in this connection, I may say that you will be welcomed by the American people as a whole who, like you, believe in tolerance and justice to the civilized world.”

In reply Baron Rothschild told the delegation:

“I must thank all of you very much for the invitation to come to Chicago. I shall plan to remain in this country long enough to be able to be in Chicago on that great day which will mean so much to the Jewish people, not only in this country, but in the whole world.

“I am sure that Jews everywhere look to this great country, the United States, where prevail liberty and tolerance, with the greatest of hope and respect; and this manifestation in Chicago will be considered by them a sign that somehow there will be peace for them in Europe.

“I should like to say that it is wonderful the way you in this country have joined together in expressing your naturally violent feelings against Germany’s behavior.

TELLS OF REICH ACTS

“It has been perfectly awful the way Germans have treated Jews and what caused more anxiety than anything else was the propaganda of Germans here that it was not true at all, that the Jews were being treated very nicely. Luckily, Americans are well aware of this and that propaganda takes no effect. I would not be surprised at all if some lieutenant of Hitler who arrived here and who was supposed to have come here to go to a class reunion goes about the country spreading the gospel of Nazism.

“I have witnessed the way they behaved in Germany. I was there last year. The head of the government told me that the lieutenants of Hitler were trying to organize a movement, not the Silver Shirts, but of “Iron Crowns,” which has for its main purpose the creation of feeling against the Jews of Rumania. The man who spoke to me in that way was John Duca, who had been friendly towards the Jews. And I remember at the end of this conversation he told me he would not be astonished if some day Hitler money would persuade some Rumanian to get him, and a few months afterward in Paris I got a wire that he had been killed. That is the way they work.”
