With an auspicious program of classical music on the specially built stage and the cream of New York society in the audience, the Philharmonic Symphony Society will inaugurate another summer season at the Lewisohn Stadium of the College of the City of New York tonight.
Despite the heavy demand for tickets which has resulted in a complete sell-out for the premiere week in advance, the society has retained the dollar top.
Jose Iturbi will conduct the orchestra tonight, playing Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture,” Chabarri’s “Aquarelles,” played for the first time in America, and the Intermezzo from Granados’ “Goyescas,” which will receive its initial Stadium rendition tonight. Beethoven’s “Symphony Number Five in C Minor” is also on the program.
Among those present will be Mayor LaGuardia, who will speak during intermission; Mrs. Vincent Astor, Countess Mercati, Fannie Hurst, Mrs. August Belmont, Ruth Pratt, Deems Taylor, and George Gershwin.
