Following weeks of controversy between two orthodox factions, the City Commission has finally passed an ordinance granting the city authoritative powers governing the sale of kosher products. A state statute has been on the books for some time.
Active in behalf of passage of the ordinance were Rabbis Joseph Konvitz, Chaim Glotzer and Louis Weller, who up to the present had unofficial authority, delegated by the city health department, to see to it that there was no misrepresentation in the sale of kosher meat or fowl.
According to the terms of the new ruling, the sale of kosher and non-kosher products in the same store is prohibited unless advertised on the premises by placards. Any advertisement of non-kosher products as kosher is strictly prohibited under penalty of a $200 fine or thirty days imprisonment for a first offense or $500 fine or ninety days imprisonment for subsequent violations.
