The Most Reverend Francis P. Keough, D.D., recently consecrated Bishop of the Catholic diocese of Providence, today was in possession of an elaborately engrossed prayer and had exchanged greetings of respect and neighborliness with rabbinical and lay leaders of the Jewish community of Rhode Island.
The prayer, invoking God’s blessing upon Bishop Keough at the threshold of his administration of the diocese, is on parchment, illuminated with letters in the bishop’s own colors. It is the creation of Reuben Leef, Palestinian artist.
The presentation was made in the diocesan chancery where Bishop Keough received the Jewish leaders and pledged himself to be friend and brother of Rhode Island Jewry.
“Being a stranger in a strange town, I am deeply touched by your desire of putting forth a hand of welcome,” the prelate said.
Jewish leaders, representative of every cross-section of the community, who saw the Bishop included Judge Philip C. Joslin, Charles C. Brown, Max Rosen, Max L. Gran#, Archibald Silverman, Samuel M. Magid, Walter I. Sundlun, Henry Hassenfeld, Dr. Ilie Berger, Rabbi Morris Schussheim of Temple Beth-Israel, and Rabbi Israel M. Goldman of Temple Emanu-El. The latter made the presentation address.
