Walter Citrine, president of the International Federation of Trade Unions, said today at a meeting here of sympathizers with the anti-Nazi trade boycott that the boycott is no mere political stunt but seeks fair play for humanity. The purpose of the movement, he declared, is to demonstrate to Germany that it does not pay to tyrannize.
“I know the argument that the boycott injures the Jews of Germany,” Citrine said, “but the present persecution will be slackened only according to the pressure of the world’s protest.
“The Jews of Germany cannot speak. British Jewry must unanimously strike, not only on behalf of their brethren but for the freedom of the world.”
Sir Oliver Locker – Lampson, friend of Prof. Albert Einstein, asserted the League of Nations is powerless to help but the British Empire stands by Jewry. He recalled that his bill, which would have permitted any Jew to become a citizen of Palestine without going to that country, failed because Palestine is a mandatory of the League.
If Palestine becomes a part of the British Empire, Locker-Lamp-son continued, it is possible that Palestine will become “the key of the world.”
“I want the Jews to be British,” he concluded, “and settled in Palestine, where they will be able to protect the British trade routes.”
