Panic swept Austria today as Nazi rebels, utterly out of hand and no longer under the control of their own leaders who profess to be ignorant of the general situation, battled fiercely with loyal Heimwehr and regular troops in various sections of the battletorn little state.

Vienna, where comparative calm prevailed, devoted the day to feverish entrenchments and strengthening of positions by loyalists in expectation of an outbreak of Nazi onslaughts in the capital, as shooting broke out in at least three different sections of the city. A false report had it that fighting had broken out in the capital.

The toll in dead and wounded of the civil war mounted rapidly, with some estimates fixing the fatalities to date in the hundreds.

Amid the wild confusion the exact figures could not be ascertained. Hospitals throughout the country are jammed with casualties of the bitter fighting.

A state closely resembling chaos prevailed in the provinces, where the Nazis fought like madmen
