Dr. Hans Luther, German Ambassador to the United States sailed today aboard the liner Europa to resume his post in Washington. The departure of Dr. Luther set at rest persistent rumors that he would be deprived of his post and that a Nazi party member would be appointed Ambassador to the United States.
Dr. Luther, the German Foreign Office explained, has completed his regular summer vacation on schedule and his return is a routine matter.
The former chancellor and head of the Reichsbank, according to rumors, had returned to Germany in anticipation of the speedy removal of Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, head of the Reichsbank, a post Dr. Luther was known to be anxious to resume. The appointment of Dr. Schacht to the post of Economic Minister which he is to combine with his present Reichsbank post, would indicate that Dr. Schacht’s position is stronger than ever.
Dr. Luther’s work as ambassador in Washington has been under fire from conservative German American groups. His insistence on the flying of the swastika has led to bad feeling in a number of instances, especially in St. Louis. At the same time Dr. Luther was accused of using the German Embassy in Washington as a head-quarters for Nazi propaganda in this country.
