Funeral services for Henry Newman, Jewish philanthropist and for many years prominent in Democratic politics, will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Union Temple, 17 Eastern parkway, Brooklyn. Burial will take place at the family vault at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Newman died Saturday at Sacandaga, N. Y., while on a vacation. He was seventy-one years old and was president of the Necar Company with offices at 150 Court street, Brooklyn.
Although he was born in Manhattan, Newman was educated and lived most of his life in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. For several years he was the Assembly District leader in his section, and at one time he held the post of Collector of Assessments and Arrears.
He was very active in the interests of the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities, the Jewish Hospital and the Brooklyn Orphan Asylum. He was a member of the Unity Club, the Society of Old Brooklynites and the Cassia Lodge of the Masonic Order.
He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Hattie Block Newman; two daughters, Mrs. Maude Jordan and Miss Edna L. Newman, and two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Rheims and Mrs. Henrietta Ullman.
