The Palestine government has decided that the Holy Land is not a field for the introduction of an income tax, Mr. Shelley, president of the Jerusalem Chamber of Commerce, declared at a meeting of the organization.
“In fulfilment of the High Commissioner’s promise that every opportunity would be given to discuss the question of an income tax thoroughly, an income tax expert of the British Treasury was called to Palestine in order to study local conditions,” Mr. Shelley said.
“We congratulate the Palestine government on the way every facility was granted to those desirous of presenting their views and we desire to express our appreciation of the courtesy and patience shown by Mr. Huntington to all who gave him the benefit of their opinion.
“We have been given to understand that it has been decided that Palestine is not a field for such financial taxation as the inherent anti-tax faculties, which normally resist taxation of any sort, would be particularly vicious in their resistance to the introduction of a new problem of how to evade taxation in this special direction. We congratulate the government for the discretion and tact with which this matter has been dealt with,” Mr. Shelley said.
