A dark picture of the Jewish situation the world over and a reminder to Adolf Hitler and his cohorts that the Jews in the past have managed to withstand more potent foes were presented today at the opening of the World Jewish Conference by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the Committee of Jewish Delegations and a noted Zionist leader.
Delivering the principal address at the opening session of the conference, Dr. Goldmann castigated the Nazi regime in Germany, which has deprived the Jews of the most elementary rights, as “a thing of horror.” He promised that the anti-Reich boycott will be pursued with vigor until the Jews regain their previous status.
Dr. Goldmann spoke after Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, who presided, delivered an eulogy on the late Dr. Leo Motzkin, president of the Committee of Jewish Delegations. Rabbi Wise also eulogized Chaim Nachman Bialik, Hebrew poet laureate who died in Vienna July 4.
Dr. Goldmann expressed deep regret that the American Jewish Committee, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and other similar organizations, were not represented at the conference, but declared he hoped that these organizations would cooperate with the conference in important individual cases.
