Quits Hotel when Jews Are Fired

Stern later said there are no Germans at the hotel and he feels certain nobody complained against any member of the orchestra. “I know most of the guests personally,” he said, “and they all liked us very much. I’m sure the guests did not complain.

“The whole trouble was because I am a Jew and three members of my orchestra who are Jews sit in front where they are easily seen. Clowes told me as much.”

Reporters tried to see Clowes again for an answer to Stern’s statement, but his secretary said he would not see newspaper men, and, furthermore, he was not in.

“My orders are that Mr. Clowes isn’t in,” she said.
