Resentment of Jews against the law passed by the Austrian government segregating Jewish children in a system of ghetto schools mounted today when the Reichspost, official government organ, warned the Austrian Jews in veiled terms to end their protest against the law.
Declaring that the Schuschnigg government would never withdraw the law, the Reichspost characterized Jewish protest as “nothing but an open Marxist attack against the government.” The paper warned the protesters “not to fall victims of such a dark conspiracy.”
“If Austria repulsed Nazi attacks it was not in order to defend Jews,” the Austrian official paper said. “Our purpose was to defend the cultural acquisitions of the country.”
The Reichspost declared that the segregation was necessary alleging that in some Vienna schools the number of Jewish pupils exceeded the Catholics.
A plenary session of the Jewish community yesterday demanded that the government withdraw the segregation law, pointing out that the measure was arousing the greatest anxiety and resentment among the Jews.
JEWS NOT CONSULTED
Jewish circles are particularly resentful because the Schuschnigg government did not even bother to consult Jewish leaders on the segregation law and adopted the law at a secret session of the cabinet on July 4.
