A legislative council in Palestine is unavoidable and Palestine Jews must make the best of the situation and accept it gracefully, Near East and India, regarded as the mouthpiece of the British Colonial Office, declared today. The magazine advised the Jews to end their opposition and to “display some sense.”
Palestinian Jewry has been unanimous in opposing the creation of a legislative council, a favorite project of High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope. Jewish leaders contend that the Arab and British members of the council will have a majority over the Jews. They also declare that the project is contrary to the spirit and letter of the Palestine Mandate.
The Colonial Office and the High Commissioner have declared time and again that despite all opposition the legislative council will be formed shortly. The Arabs, who were the first opposed to the council, have recently signified their intention of taking their seats in the body.
